Hi. My name is John and I’m an Englishman who has lived in the American South for over 18 years.
Before living here I had never encountered collard greens, grits or pimento cheese. Back home biscuits and gravy both mean something completely different to what they do here, and mention hushpuppies to an Englishman and they will automatically think of a brand of shoe rather than something you eat.
Since living here I have enthusiastically embraced the dishes and produce of the South and in the process got to know some wonderful farmers and producers.
I also occasionally get nostalgic about England and crave some of my favourite foods and flavours from back home.
As a result you will often find me experimenting in the kitchen.
I spend a lot of time thinking about food and drink and this is where I share some of those thoughts.

I too am a Brit in the South, we are in NC! Interesting to hear you get Seville Oranges, they are one of the things I have not seen here. Service berries too, I tried to grow some but they ended up getting cedar rust or some such blight and the fruit were all brown. Love your blog and pictures!
Thanks. I can only find Seville oranges at Buford Highway Farmers Market (https://www.facebook.com/BufordHighwayFarmersMarket/) which is a huge store with lots of ethnic produce and products. Close to both I85 and I285 if you’re ever passing through Atlanta. In fact I have a pile in my kitchen ready to make another batch of marmalade.
